Removing Rust with Citric Acid

For a full step-by-step, check out the Instructable.

This is a no.24 keen kutter plane, it’s about 100 years old, and was all intact before I took it apart. The sole is in good shape, the mouth is tight, and no cracks in the body. The knob is fine too, and the frame has most of it’s paint, the only small problem was some surface rust on the unpainted parts.

There are a lot of ways to remove rust (scouring pad, steel wool, sandpaper, sandblasting, electrolysis), but I think this is the easiest, cheapest, and most accessible. I removed most of the rust from the blade using 320 grit sandpaper, but the chipbreaker and hardware was untouched before soaking it in the citric acid solution.

Supplies:

  • Citric Acid Powder
  • Warm Water
  • Scouring Pad
  • Container

How-To:

  • Put parts in container, cover with water
  • Heat water on stove but not to boiling
  • Add water to container
  • Add citric acid and stir
  • Soak parts in citric acid solution for 30 minutes – 1 hour
  • Scrub with scouring pad
  • Soak parts, scrub, repeat until rust is gone
